Short answer
You do not need an IPTV playlist for many freely accessible channels. Start with the broadcaster’s official live service and check its app for your device. TELOS becomes relevant if you already have a supported source you are entitled to use and want to organise it in a player. The app itself does not provide a free channel package.
One channel
Open the official site or broadcaster app.
Several channels
Compare the terms of an official TV platform.
Your own source
Check access type and device, then set up TELOS.
The right route depends on your needs; TELOS does not include its own TV package.
The shortest route to the channel you want
Start with the content you want to watch. If you are looking for the current news programme on Das Erste or ZDF, the direct route is often through the broadcaster’s official live service. That saves you from searching for a playlist and maintaining an extra channel list.
The ARD describes its live streams as free and available without registration through a browser or app. The ZDF live service is the entry point to its live programming. Check the relevant service to see which devices and content are available. Individual programmes may be restricted by location or time.
Here, free means that the stated online access does not require an additional streaming subscription. It says nothing about your internet connection or other general household obligations. For a film, sporting event or special channel, the specific offer matters—not the label “live TV”.
Three routes you should not confuse
An official broadcaster app takes you directly to its publisher’s programming. A TV platform bundles several channels and may have its own rules for registration, advertising, devices and paid packages. A player such as TELOS plays a source that you add yourself.
| Your goal | A useful first step | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Open a particular freely available channel | Official live service or broadcaster app | Device, region, programme wanted |
| Watch several channels in one interface | Official TV platform | Registration, advertising, included channels |
| Organise a source you already have | Supported player such as TELOS | Access type, platform, terms of use |
These routes can complement each other. You do not have to replace every broadcaster app with a player. A provider app may offer features unavailable through an external playlist. Conversely, a player can make an existing source easier to use across supported devices.
Start on the TV: use the app directly
Open the official app store on your smart TV or streaming device and search for the broadcaster or TV platform’s app. Check the publisher and supported devices. A similar-sounding name does not prove an app belongs to the broadcaster.
On Samsung and LG, installation and app availability depend on model, system and country. Use the device’s own search or the smart TV overview. TELOS for Samsung Tizen and LG webOS is currently under manufacturer review; do not treat a native app as an available installation route there yet.
On Fire TV, also check the model and operating system (in German). If an official app is missing from your device, follow the alternatives documented by the provider, such as a browser or another supported device. Adding a player does not automatically make an unsupported broadcaster service compatible.
Phone and computer: watch first, then set up
A browser is often the quickest way to start on a computer. Open the official site directly and try the live programme you want. On a phone, the official app can be convenient if you watch regularly. For mobile use, check data consumption and your connection: a free stream does not mean free data transfer.
Use this short checklist:
- Is the site or app actually from the broadcaster or a named official provider?
- Is the live channel you want in the current offer?
- Does it work in your country and on your device?
- Do you need an account, or does an extra feature cost money?
- Will you be able to find the service easily next time?
Bookmark the official starting point. A long collection of unchecked stream links is less useful if they no longer work by your next viewing night.
When TELOS is a useful addition
TELOS may suit you if you already have a source with supported access details and want to use it on an available platform. This could be an M3U source or Xtream login. Before setup, check the publisher’s requirements and the TELOS device overview.
A programme that plays in a browser is not automatically a playlist you can reuse freely. We do not extract stream addresses from other apps or provide collections of unchecked premium channels. If the publisher offers official access for external players, use those exact details. If not, stay with its intended playback route.
For a source you already have, the TELOS guide through to the first channel shows what to do next. M3U and EPG explains why a working channel list and a complete programme guide are different things. A publicly reachable address alone proves neither lasting availability nor permission to reuse it.
Compare cost, advertising and availability first
Do not judge free services only by channel count. What matters is whether the programmes you want are included and the controls work on your device. Check sign-in, ad breaks, picture quality, regional access and any limit on simultaneous devices directly with the provider.
Try a typical viewing evening before buying extra hardware or an app licence. If you need only a few freely available programmes, the direct route may cover everything. If you want more convenience for a source you already have, compare free TELOS use and premium features.
This guide uses German services as examples. Translating it does not make a German offer available worldwide. When abroad, check the official service for your location; choosing another player does not remove a regional restriction.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an IPTV playlist for ARD live streams?
You do not need your own playlist to use the official ARD site or app. Check the programme you want and its availability on your device directly with ARD.
Does TELOS include free channels?
TELOS is a player and does not provide its own channel package. You need to add a supported source that you are entitled to use.
Is a free player the same as free television?
No. The app price and the terms for a TV source are separate. A free app does not unlock paid channels.
Can I add any browser live stream to TELOS?
A browser stream is not automatically a supported playlist source. Use only the access method the publisher provides for external players; otherwise use its official site or app.
Do German channels work abroad?
That depends on the service, programme and your location. Check regional restrictions with the official provider. Translating this guide does not change availability.
